19-12-21 Phil Smith Memorial Charity match results – River Derwent top stretch (alongside the pond).

Elliott Boam caught 3 grayling, a dace and a few minnows for the win off newly created peg 17.

£80 was raised for charity today. Well done to everyone who took part.

17-10-21 Roy Melbourne Memorial Match results – River Derwent

Roy was match secretary of Belper Angling Club for over 20 years, he created many pegs on the river with the help of volunteers and his Christmas matches had 160 anglers in attendance.

22-08-21 – John Mason Memorial Match results – River Derwent sewerage works section

This years winner is Mark Gregory with a weight of 3lb 5oz from peg 4 above the pontoon bridge. Mark fished waggler and maggot catching roach. £60 was raised for charity, well done to everyone who took part.

09-08-21 – River Derwent top stretch (alongside the pond) match results.

A bit of extra flow but little colour in the river tonight.

1st Sam Wildsmith 4lb 13oz, peg 6 – waggler and maggot.

2nd Terry Gough 2lb 2oz, peg 9 – waggler and maggot.

3rd Tony Carline 2lb 1oz, peg 2 – whip over groundbait with maggot hookbait.

4th Leo Verdi 1lb 15oz, peg 8 – pole and maggot.

5th Bob Harrison 1lb 14oz, peg 5 – waggler and maggot

6th Paul Spencer 1lb 8oz, peg 7 – waggler and maggot

08-08-21 – River Derwent sewerage works section open Match Results

Fished in heavy rainstorms, although the river remained fairly clear and was hard going for most, bites mainly coming in the last hour as the river began to colour up and a bit of extra flow. Winner Martin fished peg 16 with flat float and worm and netted 2 big perch, Mark on peg 12 had 30 roach on waggler and maggot, Paul on peg 17 fished bolo and maggot for a mixture of roach and perch.

The rain last week definitely improved sport on the river, some lovely fish caught tonight. Bob Harrison with a roach over a pound on waggler and maggot, Leo fishing the river for the first time also caught a pound plus roach on chopped worm on the pole. Highlight of the match was a 4lb 8oz Ide caught on waggler and maggot by Sam Wildsmith.

25-07-21 – Frank Posiak Memorial Pairs Match results – River Derwent sewerage works section

14 anglers took part in todays memorial match. The hope was that the roach that have been showing would give a good days sport, but today they were notable by their absence. Some nice perch caught and Roger Stone had a good day on the pipe peg number 1, catching roach, perch, grayling and dace.

Overall pairs winners: Roger Stone and Bryan Woolley

Runners up: Mark Gregory and Stefan Harhat

19-07-21 – River Derwent top stretch (alongside the pond) match results.

Good turnout of 12 anglers and only 2oz separating 2nd, 3rd and 4th

Nine fished the Monday night match with the river fishing pretty hard with very little colour.

1st Terry Gough 2lb 15 oz, peg 5 – pole over ground bait.

2nd Elliott Boam 2lb 13 oz, peg 4 – pole over ground bait and waggler.

3rd Asa Cooper 2lb 10oz, peg 1 – pole over ground bait.

Elliott worked hard catching gudgeon on pole over groundbait , also catching some on the waggler further out over loosefeed.

28-06-21 – River Derwent top stretch (alongside the pond) match results.

Eight Anglers fished a low clear river this evening with Asa Cooper winning of peg 6 with 6lb 2oz followed by Bob of peg 8 with 4lb 2oz.

Well done to all who fished.

Open match this Sunday on the Sewerage works stretch and Evening match next Monday on Wyver Lane stretch.

Asa Cooper had this to say about the match on Facebook:

Been on Monday night match at Belper on the river at back of pond. Started on the waggler for 10 minutes with no bites. Went on pole at 13 meters catching 81 small Dace 20 odd small roach and 2 gudgeon; all on the pole over groundbait. Three hour match, 6 ‘til 9pm, weighing 6 lb 4 oz to win the match happy days😀😀😀👍👍👍

The river was still low and clear last night and it fished hard. Pegs 1-8 were fished and all anglers caught.

1st Bob Harrison 4lb 7oz, peg 6

2nd Elliott Boam 3lb 3oz, peg 7

3rd Mark Gregory 1lb 12oz, peg 5

Bob fished the waggler with loosefeed and caught better fish than those who fed groundbait. Groundbait drew in lots of small dace which resulted in lots of missed bites for most.

Work Parties, Peg Creation & Improvements – 2021

River Derwent peg improvement works during December work parties

Once again, the Club was privileged to have some hard-working members giving up their free time to make improvements which benefit all anglers on our waters, as well as the Club.

Here we take a look back at some of the superb work undertaken during work parties on our venues last year.

May 2021

More pegs were completed on the sewerage works section below the railway bridge, with around another 5 to put timber on as well. This will give us 30 pegs on this section of the river. Great work by our volunteers!

Another project undertaken over the past 6 months, previously the last peg on this stretch of the River Derwent was peg 16, this was due to further access being blocked by boggy ground and a jungle of dead trees. Trees were removed and a raised walkway installed, which gives anglers access to another 5 pegs up to the railway bridge and also pegs above the bridge towards the pumphouse and beyond. Many thanks to our volunteers!

June 2021

Three more pegs completed on the sewerage works section, with thanks to Elliott, Adi and Martin.

Strimming was done around the parking area of the sewerage works section, along with pegs 1 to 14, in readiness for the river opening on June 16th. There was also a new peg installed below the railway bridge on the Willows section. Great work thanks to Stefan Harhat, Adi and Martin.

Another peg was completed on the pond field section – this one is the new peg number 3, downstream of the bridge.

July 2021

Peg 1 on the pond field section has benefited from a new walkway, great work by Phil Hoad and Tony Carline!

The walkway to peg 4 was completed, on the river alongside the pond. Great work once again by Phil Hoad and Tony Carline!

Another peg was created by Martin and Elliott, on the top stretch above the pond. This gives us a total of 22 pegs from the pond gate entrance to this peg; just below the railway bridge.

November 2021

Peg 11 on the pond has now been replaced, great work by Phil Hoad, Tony Carline and Sandra Hoad!

December 2021

Peg 17 was completed on the top stretch, whilst the walkway on peg 10 was replaced and a small extension added to get from under the tree canopy, above and nearer the flow. Great work by our volunteers, Adi, Elliott, Roger and Martin!

On stretch at the back of Morrisons, we have chopped out the first peg above the wires, which has produced barbel and chub in the past. More pegs will be developed in the coming months.

River pegs ready for the new fishing season

River Derwent fishing platforms, Wyver Lane Pond, Belper

The top stretch river pegs in the pond field are all ready for the start of season on 16th June! Some great fishing in lovely surroundings.

There are 16 pegs to choose from, and a large variety of species are present: predominantly dace, roach, perch, grayling, trout and chub, along with the occasional carp, barbel, bream and ide.

Also Wyver Lane Pond is looking in great shape which is a testament to the hard work by our committee members and volunteers.

River Derwent fishing peg improvements – new platforms installed on Sewerage Works section at Belper

This year, and particularly over the river close season, a small group of committee and club members have been extremely busy on our stretch of the Derbyshire Derwent; particularly the area known as the “Sewerage Works” section – downstream of Morrisons & the rubgy club in Belper. Thanks to the hard work of these volunteers, new fishing pegs have been created and several existing pegs have been vastly improved – both upstream & downstream of the famous pipe bridge/foot bridge which crosses out stretch here. These fishing pegs will benefit match anglers, pleasure anglers and specialists alike – making it more comfortable to fish some of our most popular and productive swims; noted for chub, bream, perch and barbel.

Please visit these pegs, fish from them and let us know what you catch using our online catch report form.

Particular thanks must be given to Adi, Martin and Peter, who attended all or most of the work parties. This work would not have happened without them and the club is extremely grateful for their efforts. Other special mentions must go to Phil, Phil’s wife, Robert , Martin and Wayne; who each helped out at one or more of the peg improvement working parties.

This is a continuation of work undertaken in 2018 to replace and improve the fishing platforms on our members-only stretch of the Derwent beside Wyver Lane Pond.

If you would like to help with future working parties, please get in touch via our Facebook page or our contact form. We are always in need of extra pairs of hands and we encourage all members who have the time and are physically able, to help at as many work parties as possible. Great work, which benefits all members, is done during these days and we are always grateful for any help we receive.

The club plans to continue this work to increase and improve the pegs on our stretch of the Derwent. Much of which is under-fished, partly due to its “wild” nature. We’re hopeful that this programme of peg creation will increase the number of anglers wanting to fish the stretch and improve match turnout for any future events held on the river.

With the 2019/20 river season about to start, why not get down to fish the Derwent and try out our improved pegs, which can be fished on day ticket or season permit (all tickets must be purchased in advance – no tickets are sold on the bank).

River Derwent fishing peg improvements – new platforms installed at Belper

Fishing peg improvement work on the River Derwent at Belper

Over the weekend the club has been working hard making improvements to fishing pegs on our stretch of the River Derwent at Belper.

Club and committee members made a fantastic contribution to river access during the club’s latest work party. Some of our wooden fishing platforms were rotten and in disrepair, so our team worked tirelessly to remove the old platforms and replace them with two brand-new platforms.

These platforms allow anglers to float fish the river with ease, as they move the peg out several feet from the bank. Of course, this benefits leger and swimfeeder fishermen too, but this extra distance from the bank makes float control whilst trotting so much easier.

These platforms also benefit anglers with reduced mobility, providing a safe, flat and comfortable platform to enable bank fishing for all.

These peg improvements are the latest part of our wider work to improve river access and fishing pegs along our most popular stretches of the Derbyshire Derwent.
